Hacettepe University students to the University administration: #HacettepeDoesntWantCameras

It is time for the fall term finals at Hacettepe University. The university administration recently announced that it will be mandatory for students to turn on their cameras and microphones during their online final exams.

Following the administration’s announcement, Hacettepe University students started  a social media protest. Students shared their discontent under the hashtags  #hacettepekameraistemiyor (#hacettepedoesntwantcameras) and  #hacettepeoğrencinmağdur (#hacettepeyourstudentsrightsareviolated).

The students stress that the obligation to leave the cameras and microphones on is a violation of their rights to privacy and that the practice interferes with their concentration during the exam. According to a post by a Nursing student on Hacettepe Solidarity Network’s account, the department staff force the students to use two cameras and that the academics insist on the practice. The students call for an end to this obligation and continue to protest online.
