University Media Monitoring Report Published in the News

Civic Space Studies Association shared the results of the University in the News: Media Monitoring Report, which analyzed the representation of university students and universities in government-aligned media throughout 2022, at a meeting held on December 20th at Taksim Square Hotel.

  • The first point to highlight is that the hate and hostility language spread by the news is a result of conscious choices.
  • The aim of the examined news articles is not to report the issue itself but rather to polarize and target based on existing political struggles and concerns.
  • Targeting is an area where the media and government representatives support each other. Unfortunately, this emphasis is not limited to news articles alone. Hate speech targeting LGBT+ students, in particular, permeates all aspects of life.
  • Due to news articles that target individuals, students find themselves in courtrooms facing trial.
  • Basic issues such as housing problems and livelihood concerns, which students voice when they come together, are not reflected in the news.
  • The conservative moralistic narrative prevalent in government-aligned media regarding male violence does not change when the focus is on violence on campuses. Even the words left behind by university students who lost their lives do not prevent the systematic problems from being overlooked.
