University in the News – 2022: Chapter 4
As the Civic Space Research Association, the 4th part of the report, in which we scanned and analyzed the news on the representation of university students and universities in the pro-government media throughout 2022, “The Right to Shelter” is now online.
The deepening housing crisis, especially in Istanbul, is one of the main focuses of student protests. In the news articles we analyzed within the scope of our report, the right to housing and livelihood problems were among the most frequently covered topics.
In this section, which focused on the representation of the protests on the right to housing in the partisan media, we analyzed 44 news articles on the subject. The dominant theme in the news articles ranged from the emphasis on “good news” -which emphasized the newly opened dormitories, scholarship opportunities and legal regulations with the words of politicians- to the struggle for housing and livelihood, which also included the voices of students from time to time.
